Music Report 11/29/07

Let's begin with a couple of songsters (male songstresses):

The first is Brett Dennen who I’ll describe as somewhere between a male Amy Winehouse and James Blunt. I hope I haven’t turned everyone off with that description but you may find it to be oddly accurate. He looks obnoxiously young but is actually 28 and was, this month, named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 10 Artist to watch.

The second is White Williams who is just finishing a tour with Girl Talk and will be playing Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday 12/4. I would be foolish to try to improve on the following review of his album so I’ve excerpted it below:

“‘Smoke’ is unapologetic pop that flirts with the vacuous nostalgia of the American dream; engaging ambiguous and schizophrenic instruments with impressionistic lyrics, driven by a casually heterosexual backbeat. Polished, familiar and addictive like the sound of sex in a futuristic hospital, Smoke portends a time where energy-drinking teenagers undress each other with night-vision goggles. As an amalgam of adolescent telepathy and mature awareness: White Williams is the soundtrack to our dreams of a lustful and indifferent prom night that lasts forever.”

Ghostface (Killah)’s new album “The Big Doe Rehab” will be released this Tuesday, December 4. His last two albums, “Fishscale” and “More Fish,” which might as well have been one double album, did not cease to impress. CDNow.com says to look for “raw lyricism.” Hank Wasiak associate Masta Killa appears on the record as do most other Wu Tang members. And they’ll all be together for a show at Hammerstein Ballroom on January 12th.

A group The Report has been partial to for the last few years is stopping in New York on their farewell tour at The Knitting Factory on 12/6. They rock pretty hard but they do so very melodically and with a decidedly emo flavor. Word on the street is that no one gets along with the lead singer so the band is shutting down from repeated attrition.

Hanukah’s coming early this year, and with it a set of Hanukah-themed concerts around the world including at New York’s Webster Hall. Performers will include Hadag Nachash, a live hip-hop band with a Middle Eastern edge, and Soulico, a 4 member DJ crew from Tel Aviv. Also on the bill is Budos Band self described as “the quintessence of Staten Island afro-soul,” wow.

Bonus link in The Report this week is this one. It lists and displays a hundred of album covers with partial of full nudity. Don’t miss the “Women of the SS” album which has nudity and swastikas.
