Music Report 9/20/07

Beginning again with a little hip hop flava, Q-Tip has scheduled a show at the Gramercy Theater for Oct 16 going on sale Saturday.

Coming up as part of the annual CMJ Music Marathon are appearances by two of my old favorites from the world of rap. Little Brother, hailing from Durham, NC will be playing at the Highline Ballroom October 20th with Evidence of LA-based Dilated Peoples. Little Brother is powered by 9th Wonder, the producer/beatmaker for Jay-Z, Destiny’s Child, and De La Soul who keeps them supplied with old soul samples from the likes of Al Green and Curtis Mayfield and other hypnotic bases for their tracks.

Also as part of the Marathon, Del the Funky Homosapien aka Deltron Zero of the Heiroglyphics crew will be at BB King’s October 19th. Cousin of actor Ice Cube, Del is a notable guest on the Gorillaz tracks “Clint Eastwood” and “Rock the House” and feature’s prominently on both of the Dan the Automator/Prince Paul Handsome Boy Modeling School projects. Del spits rapid fire rhymes on fanciful topics reminiscent of Kool Keith subject matter both as Doctor Octagon and as himself.

To take a phrase from Rolling Stone, Mute Math is a band that “loves Jesus but isn’t terrible.” If being not terrible isn’t enough, they also have a keytar. And they’ll be performing as a part of the CMJ Festival at Irving Plaza on 10/18. That’s three nights of excitement.

Also, 10/18 at Brookyln’s Studio B, The Cool Kids are this year’s iteration of The Clipse, Pitchfork media’s Hip Hop darling. They also reportedly toured Europe with Jesse’s ex-roommate Andres. That report cannot be independently verified.

Finally, Two Boot’s Pioneer Theater will be showing Punk Rock Holocaust 2, a slasher/zombie comedy on October 26th featuring 2004 Vans Warped Tour bands including My Chemical Romance, Bouncing Souls, Pennywise and The Aquabats.
